So, I’ve been thinking…I often hear people say “I need to get out of London for a few days!”, and I completely understand why people feel like they need a break away from busy, bustling and buzzing city life. However, I never feel like I need an escape from life in the city.
I am a city girl, through and through. I love the city for always being awake, I love the variety of things to do, I love the vibrancy of cities, cities make me happy. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy a countryside trip, actually I feel completely the opposite! Some of my favourite and most special travel adventures have been trekking in the mountains and long walks through terrain that can only be tackled in hiking boots. Many of my favourite travel adventures have taken place in remote and totally natural places where the scenery has made my jaw drop open, and I have snapped hundreds upon hundreds of photos. What I am trying to say is that I don’t crave the countryside but I love it when I am there. I never feel a need to escape the city, but I love a holiday in the countryside.
When in St Ives earlier this year, Carlos and I were walking along the costal path, as we walked further on we saw less and less people and I asked Carlos if he ever felt he needed to get away from the city, he replied that he didn’t but that he loved being in the countryside too. This is exactly how I feel, I don’t ‘need’ the escape of the countryside but I love it when I am there.
I’m interested to hear what you think? Do you need time away from the city?
On the topic of countryside exploring, some photos from a beautiful walk in Shorne Woods, Kent last weekend.
Have a wonderful weekend 🙂

Nice photography on the wild. Especially if you are a city girl… Nice post
Thanks very much 🙂 I love photographing in the countryside!
yes there is so much to see and shoot in the countryside – good job – have you ever been to teh Lake district?
I’ve never been! I’ve more recently been to the Peak District 🙂
I feel the exact same way as you. I’ve lived in big cities most of my life; I currently live kind of in the country and every now and then I feel like I want to escape to the city 40 miles away! Haha.. Not really escape, but more like visit 🙂
Haha, sounds ironic but I really know what you mean 🙂 At least 40 miles isn’t too far to go!
I’m a city girl too…I like being in the countryside, walking, taking pictures and the lot but I don’t think I could live in a small town or village (however cute it might be)!
I’m exactly the same. I’d end up feeling very isolated from places.
I am the same way. I love it when I’m there but I’m completely content in the city. I’m not one for “roughing it” or living anywhere further than a few k’s from a mall.
That’s a great way to explain it. I feel very content too 🙂
Home is where the heart is. I suppose, however, I prefer living outside the city and in a suburb or more rural area. I like access to cultural life and shopping experiences too, but these days prefer more quiet spaces than the hustle and bustle of the big city.
I agree that home is where the heart is 🙂 Thanks for stopping by
My pleasure. The world is indeed a wonderful marvel.
I for one need to sneak away sometimes, but not necessarily from the City, but just a break to explore somewhere new!
Totally agree; finding somewhere new to explore is the best 🙂
Interesting to hear your perspective…. I suppose I am a bit of the opposite of you! I grew up on a small town on an island before moving to Seattle for university and post-uni work and life. My first summer in the city was SO strange, and I often felt the need to escape back north to my island. Some seasons make me want to get out of the city more than others, but I think the more you spend time in one sort of place, the more you get to like and know it. Now I’ve become much more of a city girl, but I don’t think you’ll ever be able to take the island out of me!
I think you’re right – where you spend a lot of time definitely influences how you feel about it. Plus, where you are brought up has a big impact, I think!
Very interesting post! I’ve never lived in a city as big as London but I’ve NEVER felt the need to escape the city! I love living in the city and I love visiting cities. I live in a place that is technically a city – but it’s really just a big town and I find myself craving the city! When I go to Edinburgh or Glasgow or even London, I just feel so happy, like I’m home!
Ditto to everything you’ve said 😉 I also know what you mean by technically a city; there are cities and then big cities hehe
